Our Story
Kalamazoo Defender is a nonprofit public defender office serving Kalamazoo County through a holistic defense model that recognizes every client as more than the charges they face.
We know that legal involvement rarely happens in isolation. Poverty, trauma, racism, housing instability, untreated health needs, and other systemic barriers often shape the circumstances that bring someone into the criminal legal system. Without intervention, those same conditions can lead to longer sentences, repeated charges, family instability, and generational harm.
Kalamazoo Defender works to change that reality.
Our team combines skilled courtroom advocacy with community-based support. Attorneys, investigators, mitigation specialists, and client navigators work together to understand the full story behind every case and to ensure our clients have both the legal defense and the support they need to move forward.
Through The Village, clients are connected to transportation assistance, counseling, housing referrals, workforce resources, and other barrier-removal services that help stabilize lives beyond the courtroom.
At Kalamazoo Defender, we believe justice requires more than legal representation alone. It requires seeing the whole person, addressing the conditions that shape legal involvement, and building pathways to dignity, stability, and opportunity for individuals and families in our community.
